DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

Zoology Department

Zoology is a study of animals and its diversity present all over the world . For one, the study of animals and communities provides insight into how "life" works, and, consequently, how we work. The higher mammals provide especially useful insight into the human world. Many Zoologists are directly involved with the conservation of threatened or endangered species; the maintenance of biodiversity is considered by many to be crucial to our survival. Animals also have a great impact on our lives; they provide us with food, with companionship, and with a sense of wonder (and sometimes annoyance!). These are just a few of the reasons why understanding animal life is important to humans."

Along with the importance of preserving biodiversity (to preserve endangered species, prevent cruelty and for animals of importance e.g. bees) there are many medicinal organisms out there which are yet to be discovered. Most are plants, but some are animals. Although a zoologist won't work directly with plants, if you remove one link of the food chain the whole thing can be destroyed. They preserve the environment which of course is important - no explanation needed here! Another important reason is because we are animals, so understanding how other animals work has direct importance to us. We cannot test new drugs on humans straight away, so we test on similar animals.

The science that explains the world of animals, their evolution to the present forms over time, their habitats and food habits, and their co-existence with each other is called zoology. It is legitimate to question the importance of zoology for starters. However, imagine how bewildering it would be to observe all these different live forms around us, some of them with features common to human beings. Humans appreciate life and nature, and animals form an integral form of our natural surroundings. Thus, knowledge of zoology is essential to experience the wonders of nature in the fullest.

Zoology explains the ideal habitats required for the sustenance of animal species and the food chains that govern their eating habits, thus enabling the all powerful human race to take appropriate steps of ensuring the safety and continuation of these life forms. Hence, collecting information about animals is not a waste of effort, but a necessary activity with far reaching impacts on the human life. Preservation of the habitat of animal forms is a responsibility of human race, and zoology guides us in this regard.
