DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

Physics is the study of matter, energy and their interactions. It is the natural science useful to understand how the material in the universe behaves. It generates fundamental knowledge required for understanding other disciplines, such as earth science, agricultural, chemical, biological, and environmental sciences, plus astronomy and cosmology - subjects of substantial importance.

Physics is the global enterprise which plays a key role in the all-round progress of humankind. It is the central subject in the education of chemists, engineers and computer scientists, as well as practitioners of the other physical and biomedical sciences.

Physics improves our quality of life by providing the basic understanding necessary for developing new instrumentation and techniques for medical applications, such as computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, ultrasonic imaging, and laser surgery.

Physics also makes significant contributions through advances in new technologies such as television, computers and domestic appliances.

Physics is an essential element of the science education. The professional societies working for development of Physics all over the world:– There is a large number of Physical societies in the world extensively working for the development of the subject Physics.

Few leading of them can be mentioned as following -

  • Indian Institute of Physics (IAPT)
  • PRAMANA
  • American Physical Society (APS)
  • Minnesota Area Association of Physics Teachers (MAAPT)
  • American Institute of Physics
  • American Astronomical Society
  • Society of Physics Students (SPS)

Physics covers a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particles (such as quarks, neutrinos, and electrons) to the largest super clusters of galaxies. Included in these phenomena are the most basic objects composing all other things. Therefore physics is sometimes called the “fundamental science”.

Physics aims to describe the various phenomena that occur in nature in terms of simpler phenomena. Thus, physics aims to both connect the things observable to humans to root causes, and then connect these causes together.

Many positions, especially in research, require a doctoral degree. At the Master's level and higher, students tend to specialize in a particular field. Fields of specialization include experimental and theoretical astrophysics, atomic physics, molecular physics, biophysics, chemical physics, medical physics, condensed matter physics, cosmology, geophysics, gravitational physics, material science, nuclear physics, optics, particle physics, and plasma physics.

Public sector provides a lot of career opportunities as compared to private sector companies for Physics Graduates. Teaching, scientific instrument operator, laboratory technician etc are some of the areas in the public sector that recruits physics graduates in plenty. Financial services in the public sector also demand the service of B.Sc physics graduates.

A candidate with a Bachelors degree in Physics can apply to different jobs through the test conducted by following organizations in the government sector.

  • Union Public Service Commission
  • Staff selection commission
  • Indian Forest Services
  • Public Sector Bank
  • State PCS
  • Indian Defense services etc.

Those candidates who are looking for a career in government sector organizations need to update themselves with the notification of exams conducted by the UPSC, MPSC etc as the test conducted by these organizations opens way for candidates to enter into various departments. They need to prepare these exams with full dedication and with systematic planning so that they will be successful in their career. UPSC conducts exam for civil posts like IFS, IPS, and IAS in the government sector.

Physics Department

Physics Department is one of the science Departments in the S.B.E.S. College of Science established in 1963. The Physics Department was also established at the same time. Our department has spacious laboratory along with dark room. Under UG Physics combination is with Chemistry, Maths, Computer Science, and Electronics. Our department is well furnished and enriched with equipment as being established at the same time when college established. Our department has departmental library for the staff. Retired staff had donated books to department. Some of our past students like Ms. Jyoti Gadhe has joined air force. Mr. Ashish Shelke in police, Ms. Akansha Kashikar in research working as Assitant Professor in Statistics in Pune University.

Our staff from beginning is very dedicating. Dr. S. V. Birajdar of our department worked as Principal for nearly 14 years. Under his authority our college got A grade under NAAC accreditation.

  • UG Course - 1963-1964
  • Shri. M. V. Pathak - 1963-1988
  • Shri. R. M. Deshpande - 1988-2000
  • Shri. B. N. Sirsikar - 2000-2005

  • Shri. H. N. Winkare - 2014-16
  • Dr. Mrs. S.V. Vaidya - 2016- till date.

It is one of the active department in the college having Cultural and Personality Development Club. Our department has also conducted National Level Seminar “Recent Advances in Physical Sciences”. Every year our department arrange study tour at various places in order to explore their knowledge which is included in their syllabus. Every year results of UG classes are much better than University results. Many times our students have good ranking in this competitive examination. Our past students are working in Research, Academics and Industries.

  • Ms. Aparna Kulkarni cleared her Ph. D. entrance exam with good score in October 2014.
  • Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship (RGNF-2016) for Doctoral Research funded by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi Sanction Letter No: F1 17.1/2016-17/RGNF-2015-17-SC-MAH-375 /(SA-III/Website).
