DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY

Biochemistry is study of chemistry of life be it human, animal, plants or microorganisms. They all share basic common process- process of life. Biochemistry deals with these processes at molecular level, which take place in the unit of life –Cell. It also includes the study of biomolecules; their structures and functions.

Biochemistry is the basis of Life Sciences/ Biosciences/ Biotechnology. Knowledge of Biochemistry is essential for several branches- Medical, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Agriculture etc. Realizing the importance of Biochemistry in life-sciences, the subject has been introduced as an independent and as one of the three optional subjects at B.Sc. level, in our college, in 1978. S.B.E.S. College of science is the only college in Marathwada region offering Biochemistry at undergraduate level. Only few colleges in Maharashtra run the B.Sc. Biochemistry course.

No other science subject as Biochemistry has much applications as biochemistry to the disciplines of Medicine, Health, Nutrition, Agricultural, Veterinary, Bioengineering and Biotechnology. Every aspect of life – birth, growth, reproduction, ageing and death involves biochemistry. Biochemistry is the most rapidly developing subject in genetic engineering and most innovative subject in medicine. The major share of Nobel Prizes earmarked for Medicine and Physiology has gone to Biochemists. The advances in biochemistry have tremendous impact on human welfare - in diagnosis of the diseases, products such as insulin obtained from genetic engineering and the possible use of Gene therapy in near future. 4. The subject Biochemistry forms the basis of various courses –Pharmacy/ Medical/ Dietetics and Nutrition / Agriculture. The fundamentals are backbone of P.G. and Research.

The alumni of this department is spread all over Maharashtra, working in different bio-science laboratories, industries particularly pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology’s, medical institutions and also in biochemical divisions of institutions including atomic research institute.
